Offshore Insertion Craft Concept Demonstrator

Advanced anchor deployment & recovery system to military specification

The project, to build a 6m demonstrator to prove the innovative features of Steller Systems’ full sized 19m Offshore Insertion Craft, provided EMS with a uniquely challenging design brief.

EMS were tasked with the design and supply of an advanced anchor deployment & recovery system, and a transom door for efficient payload unloading. The anchor system at the bow needed to be able to launch and recover the anchor in the surf zone of the nearshore and be able to physically pull the vessel off the nearshore quickly, potentially under high-risk military situations.

Our solution featuring an electrically actuated bow door and a hydraulically actuated folding arm, allows the anchor to be securely stowed inboard during transit. When deployed, the bow door opens to permit the anchor arm to unfurl and lower the anchor, after which the door closes to shield the vessel from breaking waves. A custom-designed, high-capacity hydraulic winch was incorporated to provide the necessary line pull to pull the vessel off the beach and high-speed line recovery thereby preventing fouling of the propulsion system once underway. When not in use the anchor is fully retracted and stored within the wave-piercing bow compartment which was a critical feature for maintaining safety and performance at speeds exceeding 40 knots.

For the transom door, EMS designed the system components and hydraulic circuit. EMS also manufactured the major component and supplied the equipment to operate the transom door.

Our comprehensive involvement, from system design and manufacture of major components through to assembly, testing, and final commissioning, ensured the system operated seamlessly and contributed effectively to the success of the overall project.
