Hydrogen Fuel Cell Retrofit - Project Verdant

Integrating alternative fuels into existing vessel platforms

Project Verdant, led by Green Marine (UK) Ltd, represented a pioneering initiative to retrofit an existing crew transfer vessel with hydrogen fuel cell technology, aiming to significantly reduce operational emissions and advance sustainable maritime practices. EMS provided technical expertise in the integration of alternative fuels, conducting a comprehensive feasibility assessment, and developing a robust preliminary design framework for the retrofit.

Our scope of work included the design and specification of a modular battery room layout, the development of an advanced electrical equipment cooling system, and the configuration of a hybrid shaftline arrangement to ensure optimal performance and safety. EMS also facilitated collaboration among project stakeholders by supporting the HAZID (Hazard Identification) workshop which was instrumental in securing preliminary design approval. In addition, we provided detailed weights and equipment data and conducted a thorough pricing exercise to evaluate the overall feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Ben Pym, Managing Director of Engineered Marine Systems said, ‘This project marks a step change in the industries decarbonisation journey and is necessary if the sector is going to deliver on net zero targets. The output of this project demonstrates the technical readiness of hydrogen fuel cell technology for use in CTVs and there is significant opportunity for the industry to take lessons learnt from the design work completed here.’
