Methanol Fuelled Expedition Yacht – Archipelago 63

The first methanol fuelled leisure yacht

As the first zero-emission, long-range leisure vessel available on the market, this project harnessed cutting-edge methanol-reforming technology with fuel cells and a methanol combustion engine. In our role as technical advisory partners, EMS was responsible for developing the propulsion system specifications, defining propulsion requirements, and delivering the complete mechanical systems design.

Our team worked in close collaboration with a network of specialist equipment suppliers to produce an integrated and comprehensive propulsion system design. Through the careful coordination of diverse technical inputs, we ensured seamless compatibility and optimised performance across all system components, thereby supporting the overall success of the project. Safety was a primary consideration throughout the design process, and our solutions effectively addressed the unique challenges associated with the storage and utilisation of methanol as a marine fuel.

The success of this project has introduced to the market a vessel that utilises a next-generation fuel, providing a safe and low-emission alternative to traditional diesel propulsion.
